Daisy
Dear Daisy –
As I sit here on your last morning and I try to imagine our house without you, it is impossible to do so – for over 18 years you have been a part of my daily existence. Bringing you home as a tiny kitten, having you cower from everyone but be Velcro kitty with me (although you’d still act like I was going to hurt you somehow!). You making Mack snuggle with you and tolerate you even when he didn’t want to. The loss of Mack and you then breaking Copper in to be another big/little brother. You falling out of the screen window and being gone for a couple of days – jenny, aunt bubbi, john, so many people looking for you. Seeing you but not being able to get to you because you were so scared. Finally going out to check the trap at 1 or 2am and finding you dirty and scared but okay. You sleeping with me at night, snuggling with me during the day. And then you met joseph. Oh how the 2 of you have bonded. I can’t imagine coming out in the morning and not seeing the 2 of you having coffee together…. You love snuggling with his warmth – and on that blanket – we are going to have to burn that thing!!
As you’ve gotten older, some of your behaviors have become more challenging – but I’m guessing that will be said for all of us. As you’ve lost your hearing, you have become SO loud and demanding and extra bossy! You definitely tell us exactly how you feel – whether it’s 5am, 5pm, or 8pm flogging time. All of your different sounds – I think you’ve trained us to know what they all mean. The “meh” noise – the “F you” noise – the “give me my fried chicken right now!” noise, the “wasabi” noise…. The slurp-slurp-slurp of you drooling because almost all of your teeth are gone. The way you can be dead asleep but the second I get on a phone call or a work video call, there you are, on my shoulder, contributing to the call.
The house will be quieter without you, the neighbors will wonder what has happened. The house will be lonelier without you and so much of what joseph and I talk about will be different. The house will smell better (sorry but it’s true), but I would trade all of those things for you to be healthy and well for another 19 years. You will be missed little girl – our Daisy May, our May-May, our PQuad, our granny pissy pants, our Mayhem, our peanut, and so many other little nicknames. Go in peace, in love, thank you for almost 19 amazing years. Go chew on Copper’s hocks, snuggle with Mack, introduce yourself to Tobey and Ziggy and Simon. We love you and will miss you beyond words.
